Make-Up Tips for Over 50’s...How To Create That Diva Look
Makeup Tips for Over 50's, Including Makeup Tips for Hooded Eyes!
I asked everyone in the Divine Divas VIP Group which tips you’d most appreciate and the most common request was make-up tips for mature ladies, especially when it comes to applying eye-shadow to hooded eyes, so voila. Your wish is my command. I sat down with our gorgeous make-up artist, Shannon, who gave me some of her wisdom…
(And just to clarify, the main thing Shannon wanted to express was that you can wear your makeup HOWEVER YOU WANT. You don’t have to follow these tips. Make up is fun, so go for whatever makes YOU feel good.)
Primers Are Your Best Friend
Hooded eyes can mean that the eyeshadow smudges onto your eyelid which is such a pain, but, don’t worry because we’ve got you. It’s an easy fix, just start with a primer. This goes for your eyes and face (you can even get lip primers). You can either use an eye primer or a concealer (I use concealer). The reason for this is that you need something that the eyeshadow can grip onto or it can smudge.
Prime your face as well, this gives you a good base for foundations/concealers. It’ll help smooth your skin and can sometimes really make a difference to how your makeup sits. There are different primers for different skin types, so its good to find one that works for you.
Time to Learn What a Natural Crease Is
Apply eyeshadow past your natural crease. (Check out the photo above to see what a natural crease is). This works especially well for people with hooded eyes, as you will have a smaller lid space so sticking to just your natural crease will sometimes mean the eyeshadow is hidden or a lot less visible. Applying eyeshadow past the natural eye crease will widen your eyes, so when you start applying the eyeshadow work it outwards and upwards closer to your brows. Be sure to blend the eyeshadow as well; the closer you go to your eyebrow the lighter you’ll want the colour. For example, use a brown shade on your lid then use a fluffy brush to blend it past your natural crease to keep the colour soft. If you’re using two colours, blending means the transition between the two colours is seamless and if you’re just using one colour, blending means there won’t be any harsh lines.
Go Steady with the Eyeliner
You may want to avoid a heavy eyeliner look. It can make your eyes appear smaller. For hooded eyes, I recommend a thin subtle liner above your top lashes, or simply using a pencil liner in your top waterline. (Like we did with this gorgeous Diva above.) It will emphasise your eye without being too heavy. For eyeliner you want smudge proof products. (It’s taken me quite a few liners to find the right type for me, but the one I currently use is the Collection Liquid Eyeliner.)
Use Dewy or Hydrating Foundations
As we age, our skin tends to lose moisture and elasticity, which can make it appear dry and dull. Using a dewy or hydrating foundation can help to revive your skin's natural glow and create a smooth, even complexion. Opt for lightweight formulas with buildable coverage, and apply them with a makeup sponge or a brush in a sweeping motion. Don't forget to blend well, especially around the eyes and mouth, to avoid creasing and caking. If you wear foundation, using something a little more light weight may work better for you. Wearing full coverage can sometimes add texture to your skin.
Cream Products Do It Better
Cream products work well on mature skin as they are a lot less drying, and can make your skin look more hydrated. I like to use cream bronzers and blush as they blend so nicely into the skin!
Finish with a Pop of Colour
A touch of blush or lipstick can brighten up the face beautifully!
