How Can You Embrace Ageing?

At Divine Divas, we often get asked “am I too old to do this?”. After a certain age, it can be easy to feel that we are not thin enough, not sexy enough, not young enough or not attractive enough. We remember our youth and sigh for the beautiful, brave, daring young woman that we didn’t realise we were back then…so often failing to see the beautiful, brave, daring woman that we STILL are!

In our European culture, we have absorbed the idea that only a body that is young, slim and as nearly perfect as possible deserves to be loved and displayed with pride. Yet from working with thousands of women of all ages (the oldest so far has been 86 but we won’t stop there!) we know that EVERY woman deserves to see and to celebrate the gorgeous Diva that they are, both inside and out.

We’ve drawn inspiration from cultures around the world to suggest some tips to help YOU celebrate the amazing body that you are in, whatever your age or body type.

Use the Mirror

In the 2022 film Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, there is a pivotal moment where Emma Thompson, aged 63 at the time, strips off in front of the camera to really look at her body in the mirror. In that moment, we see Emma’s character take in her (gasp) slightly sagging, scarred stomach, her wrinkles and her beauty, appraising herself slowly and with honesty before finally giving a nod of acceptance. When did you last look at yourself, REALLY look, without just looking to find flaws? Seeing beyond the inner critic to the real you with love and acceptance? Whispering to yourself quiet words of love and encouragement?

Tara Wall even recommends using a mirror for meditation in order to really connect with yourself!

Embrace Eastern Values

In Western cultures, productivity and beauty are highly valued. As we got older and our productivity declines or our beauty does not correspond to our youthly ideals, our own perceived self-value can plummet. However, Confucian values state that the older you are, the more knowledge and experience you have to share and that older people should be respected and honoured. Buddhism talks about the law of least resistance, where trying to resist something such as ageing will only make you suffer.

Embrace these values for yourself and treat yourself with the respect and honour that you deserve, accept that ageing is inevitable and natural - and it doesn’t diminish your beauty or your value.

Take Inspiration from African Birthday Parties

I was reading an article recently by an African American lady who described African birthday parties as “loud and fun, not quiet funerals.” She pointed out that the older a woman gets, the more she has to celebrate: not only getting a year older but all the knowledge, wisdom and experience that she has to share. So why not make your next birthday a real celebration of yourself? Be loud, be proud and acknowledge the amazing woman that you are! Hey, why not celebrate your birthday with a Boudoir Experience? We have a special offer for our Birthday Divas!

Celebrate your Passions like a Tahitian

A lot of Tahitians love playing video games. My husband, who lived there for a while, used to love watching people purchase a new one as soon as their pay dropped and talk about it for hours!

Have you ever noticed what happens when you talk to someone about something they’re passionate about? How their eyes light up, the smile beams out and they become animated and, dare I say it, beautiful? So embrace your passions! Talk to people about them, join groups where others are as enthusiastic as you are let that joie de vivre shine!

Not found that thing that makes you feel alive yet?  Sixty and Me have some great ideas for hobbies for women over 50.

Flaunt your Sexuality like a French woman

Sometimes the menopause can feel like the end of ourselves as sexual beings. Yet in France, older women are often celebrated as being more experienced and therefore quite a catch. At over 70, the former french President Emmanuel Macaron’s wife is 24 year older than her husband and many French men will comment on how lucky he is. So decide to be a little more French. Put on some clothes that make you feel chic, remind yourself of all that you’ve done and you’ve learnt and let yourself enjoy being the sexy, sexual woman that you are. For more tips on feeling confident, have a look at this blog by Susan who came to us post menopause.

After all, as Emma Thompson found out in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, great sex can make you feel alive at any age!

Are you inspired to push yourself out of your comfort zone and see and celebrate yourself? Divine Divas is a running a 40 over 40 Experience aimed at showing the world how sexy and beautiful women over 40 are! Click here to find out more
