Self Love is Sanity, Not Vanity: 10 Top Self-Care Tips!
“Self-care” and “self-love” has become a popular topic in the last few years with lots of people and companies talking about how beneficial it is… but what is it? Does it just mean a long bath with lots of bubbles? Well, it definitely could do - but self care is more than that. Sometimes it doesn’t even feel good in the moment - it could be going for a run (even when you really don’t want to) or setting some boundaries with someone who struggles to respect your feelings. But what do setting boundaries and bath bombs have in common? Ultimately, they all help nourish you. They help you thrive. They help you step into the most confident, most content version of yourself.
Naturally this means that self-care is a very personal thing; your relationships, jobs, personality and everything in between will dictate what helps you most. However, we took to our lovely Divine Divas Group to ask for their favourite self-care tips… and this is what was said! Have a read and take some inspiration on how to take care of yourself - like you deserve!
1) Arts & Crafts
“Mine is embroidery - so more generally just finding a hobby that feels meditative in some way. You can just sit and focus on that; it requires enough attention to distract you from anything you're worried about and it's nice to see yourself creating and learning at the same time.” - Jess
2) A Pampering Session
“Mine is relaxing with my beauty products. I start with a full body scrub after a long soak, then I oil myself from top to toe and lay on warm towels on my bed and listen to relaxing music. Once dry I use my body brush to boost circulation and drink a bottle of cold mineral water, then I move on to my face and do a full cleansing routine and finish off with my perfect facial. I always feel brand new afterwards.” - Sharon
3) Shouty Breathing (A.KA. Breathing Techniques!)
“What I call shouty breathing when I’m stressed, I take a deep breath in through my nose, hold it for a few seconds and then exhale through my mouth with a loud arghhhhhh sound, I feel tension and stress leave me and do this as many times I need to feel calm; admittedly my lodger thinks I’m strange doing this but it works for me.” - Theresa
4) A Spot of Boudoir (or whatever helps remind you to look after yourself too!)
“If you haven’t already, book your DD experience! This will, without doubt, give you that boost! Every single morning I look at my gorgeous self on the wall and know that I've got this!” - Donna
5) “Boring Self-Care” - Move & Drink Water!
“Boring self care! Make sure you have enough to drink and enough to eat. If you don’t have the energy to make a sandwich, eat the bread and filling separately. Take your meds, even the ones that make you feel sick. Brush your hair (if your hairstyle allows) and splash cold water on your face. Self care doesn’t have to be big or expensive.” - Nicki
6) Do What You Love
“I like to practice singing while having a nice hot bubble bath. Our bathroom has great acoustics! The warm water, fragment bubbles, and a relaxing face mask always puts me in a meditative state. It's lush.” - Laramie
7) Animals and A Cup of Tea!
“I spend time with just me and forget the world for a while. The universe is me, a cup of tea and four cats. I don't think about anything else. Or I go to the book shelf and pick a world for my brain to take a holiday in for a while.” - Sarah
8) Get Outside In Nature!
“This isn’t really one I can practice much during lockdown this time around but, for me, just sitting in the garden for 10 minutes is definitely good for my soul.” - Jenn
9) Don’t Be Afraid to be Silly
“Just take time for yourself. Have a good book, a glass of wine and shut out the world. It does me the power of good. Then I put on my best face, go out there and start all over again. Some days when I feel a bit down I look at myself in the mirror, stick out my tongue then blow myself a kiss, always makes me smile.” - Helene
10) Don’t Be Afraid to Invest In Yourself
“I’m meticulous about my skincare regime now (I never used to be!) and what a difference it has made! I use good quality products and will pay that little extra for the results - because I’m worth it.” - Louise
